Video Project

Updated: Apr 29, 2020

This short film explores a young woman coming to terms with her own internalized sexism. In the video, she dresses stereotypically feminine, and does stereotypical feminine activities such as cooking and cleaning and take care of her man. She sees nothing wrong with this at first because she has internalized these ideals so much that she does not realize how her boyfriend treats her, and how she lets him. She goes to take out the trash and finds a magazine which when opened transports her into the magazine. In the magazine, she sees a timeline of images in which women are portrayed as housewives and sexual objects. The voiceover and images make her realize that she deserves respect and make her understand that women will never be able to make progress if she does not resist these normative ideals. She then comes back in and hits her man over the head with a pan and kills him. She sits down and drinks his whiskey, showing a sense of aggression and masculinity versus the femininity she had previously performed. This aggressive scene turns out to be in her imagination, and instead, she tells her boyfriend, "I'm done" and leaves. I wanted to include the violent daydream as a way to show her frustration and anger but how she does not push for feminism in a violent manner. People often think that feminists are just angry man-haters, and I wanted to play with this idea in the video.
