Artist Statement:
For this project, I wanted to experiment and use everyday sounds in a new way. I began the piece with someone skateboarding and walking into a coffee shop, hearing the noises all around, and then they hear an alarm.
As soon as the alarm went off, I wanted to create a much more ominous and disturbing audio experience. I wanted it to seem like a dream, and I used everyday sounds but in strange and distorted ways.
Our dreams take what is familiar to us in reality and often distort them and use them in weird, scary and disturbing ways, which is the effect I was going for with the sounds.
The alarm then went off again and the person wakes up from this dreamscape and essentially reverses their day, with the noise of the coffee shop, and walking out and skating away. I wanted it to be very similar at the beginning and end with weird twists and odd sounds in the middle to shake it up.
Someone's everyday routine has turned upside down with the distorted noises and then turned back to normal. I wanted this piece to begin as monotomous, turn dark and ominous, and then return to the monotony of daily life.
