Reading Response 1

The article discusses David Dunn’s perception and relationship with music, as well as the environment and the connectivity between the two. He offers up that music is our way of mapping reality which resonates with me. Sounds are constantly around us and they are what help us to make sense of the world around us. Humans cannot exist without making sounds. Dunn discusses the difference between sound art and music for entertainment and says that music for entertainment is easy to engage with but lacks long term interest, where sound art needs patience to engage with but ultimately leaves the audience richer in the end. Dunn aims to create work that uses sound as a way to understand our biosphere.

The most interesting part of the article for me was when he discussed his work with

mockingbirds. He describes how he used to think he was hearing zoo animals at night but figured out that it was mockingbirds re-creating the sounds of the animals at the San Diego Zoo. He then experimented with playing electronic sounds for the birds to match. The birds eagerly tried to mimic the artificial sounds just like any other sound. Dunn was fascinated by this because humans often see artificial things as opposite and evil to nature, but the mockingbirds did not. I think that this is a clear example of how we can use technology in conjunction with nature and create art. We do not have to separate our artificial world from the natural world, we just have to work together with it to create what we want.
