Faux-Selfie Project 1

Updated: Feb 16, 2020

This series is a reflection of my imagined character who is interested in mixing the past with the present in an attempt to understand how women's gender roles have been maintained over time. She is interested in the aesthetics of the 40s and 50s, as well as the aesthetics of the age of technology and the vibrant colors often associated with it. Each of the pieces in this series incorporates these aesthetics and a perspective of what women are expected to be in society. By incorporating these two aesthetics, the series demonstrates how the expectations and ideals for women have largely stayed the same since women were supposed to be the perfect and beautiful housewife in the early and mid-1900s. Today women are supposed to keep up with these oppressive ideals in many ways which can alter and torture one's identity. The images displayed are a self-portrait of the imaginary of my character and expresses her dealing with these feminine ideals of beauty as she attempts to discover her own identity and balance with gender norms.
