My webadventure takes the viewer on an interactive experience that explores problems with the patriarchy. You first choose a stereotypical binary character; barbie or ken. Once you choose barbie you can either be a housewife or a businesswoman. Either way, you become a mom. The housewife option struggles with not having time for herself, and the businesswoman struggles between being seen as an absent mom and sacrificing her career. Any option you pick for barbie takes you to a page that says you have failed to be a successful woman. On the ken side, you can be a stay at home dad or a doctor. The stay at home dad either gets praised by friends and family or gives up and goes to medical school. The doctor can either focus on work or have an affair with his nurse. No matter what option you pick for ken, you are a successful man. This is meant to poke fun at how women often feel they "can't win" and men are often deemed successful no matter what they do. I also wanted to explore the double standard with working moms vs. stay at home moms, and in comparison to stay at home dads who are praised for just being a dad. The end pages ask if you want to continue and if you click "no", it will take you to an outside link that either is an article on stay at home dad privilege, or for barbie, how to fight double standards in the workplace. I wanted to have the webadventure be sarcastic and the links to be more educational and serious to juxtapose it. The other hidden link is on the home page where it asks if you want to be barbie or ken. If you click "or" it takes you to a page that says you chose nonbinary, and you can either restart or click a link to a youtube video explaining what nonbinary is. I wanted to add this hidden link because I wanted to show that there is more than the binary we are used to. It is a hidden link because I do not think a lot of people would think of nonbinary as an option. I also used a pink to blue gradient background to reinforce the theme of the binary since pink is stereotypically for women and blue for men. I wanted this project to poke fun of how society views people in such a stereotypical and specific way, such as white, cis, straight, and middle to upper class. I wanted to make fun of the patriarchy and the problems that come with it through barbie's eyes.
